Week 9: March 8, 2022
This week we had a very informative presentation with Chantelle Morvay-Adams from BCEdAccess about accessible technology and the role it plays in supporting inclusion within the classroom. We learned so much about normalizing technology within the classroom, ways to support our students with tech, and how to continue learning about ableism and its presence in our daily lives.
There were many important takeaways that I learned from todays class. These included removing barriers and explaining that every individual is going to need different tools to support their learning. By building clear rules and guidelines around technology and reminding students that these are tools, not toys, is key. One size does not fit all and equity is not always equality so having these conversations with our students from the beginning will help create a more understanding and welcoming environment. By working together, building relationships and learning how to best serve each child, we will promote inclusion. We must acknowledge and accept that everyone is going to have different tools in their tool box to help them achieve their goals and further succeed.
Through navigating the process of realizing a student may need technology, to getting the tech they need, there are some key steps that must be considered. Read the IEP early on to better understand the student but also remember that it does not define them and is a working document that will change as they grow. Engage with the family and the student about their needs as they likely know what’s best for them and what has previously worked! What does the school have available for our students? Do I need to further advocate for more technology resources in my classroom? How will I embed this technology into my everyday teaching, and how will I become familiar and comfortable with these resources? These considerations will benefit all parties involved and hopefully make the process easier and emphasize inclusion for all.
